National Rally Makes Electoral Gains

French National Assembly Election: Macron's Party Takes Hit

National Rally Makes Electoral Gains

Paris, France - July 7, 2024

In a stunning electoral upset, President Emmanuel Macron's party Ensemble failed to secure a majority in the French National Assembly, the country's lower house of parliament. Projections show Ensemble winning 150 to 170 seats, falling short of the 289 needed for a majority. This marks a significant setback for Macron, who had hoped to consolidate his power and push through his legislative agenda.

The biggest surprise of the election was the strong performance of the far-right National Rally (RN), led by Marine Le Pen. RN secured 334 of the vote in the first round, reflecting growing dissatisfaction among French voters with the status quo. Le Pen's party is projected to win between 100 and 150 seats, making it the second-largest bloc in the National Assembly.

The results of the parliamentary election have thrown French politics into uncertainty. Macron will now have to negotiate with other parties to form a coalition government, a task that could prove challenging given the diverse political landscape in the National Assembly. The election has also raised questions about Macron's leadership and the future direction of French politics.
